Update: USM Haller 1st Generation vs. 2nd Generation - What you should know!
The Evolution of Generations
Around 1990, the time had come: the 1st generation of the USM Haller design classic was replaced by the 2nd generation of the modular furniture system. This brought about several changes, new components, elements, and functional transformations of the furniture. Reason enough for us to take a closer look at both generations for you.
If you place both generations side by side, no difference is visible at first glance. As is often the case, the devil is in the details: the biggest problems you'll encounter – at the latest during a planned redesign or disassembly – will be with the connectors! While the external elements of the two USM Haller generations pose no problems for assembly and disassembly, the connectors of the 1st generation have been replaced by new variants that differ significantly in their handling.
Consisting of three elements – 1st generation connector
(1× screw, 2× outer clamps / threads)
Disassembly is only possible with a 1st generation connector puller.
Consisting of two elements – 2nd generation connector
(1× screw including plastic sleeve, 1× external thread)
Assembly and disassembly are possible with a 2nd generation tool set.
Once you know which generation your furniture belongs to, the whole thing becomes a bit simpler! There is an available tool kit for each generation, allowing you to assemble, disassemble, and reconfigure your modular furniture as you wish. If you are still unsure, it is best to choose the Rudi Tool Set. This is suitable for both generations.
Conclusion
Although the differences are generally limited and one definitely cannot speak of a new modular furniture system, the two generations are nevertheless distinct in their handling. Overall, the disassembly of the 1st generation USM Haller furniture is a bit more complex, but visually, for a design specialist, almost no differences are visible! The rest is a matter of taste and habit.
